AbstractOur species expansion out of Africa was accompanied by progressive genetic differentiation. Thus, it is possible to detect by the analysis of extant populations the migrations having occurred after ~1500 and to estimate their dates. We present the cases of those occurring between Portugal mainland and former African colonies and the origin of disease highly frequent among Portuguese. In the first, we show that genetic exchanges were gender-biased, as typical for colonial settings, and that the presence of genetic profiles of Sub-Saharan origin in Portugal is attributable to modern slavery. For the second, we demonstrate that the worldwide spread genetic variant causing Machado Joseph disease, in contrast with the previous belief based on classical historical documentation, suggesting a Portuguese Sephardic origin, has indeed expanded from the Far East. These examples of reconstruction of past events (Archaeogenetics) illustrate the complexity of interactions between Genetics and History, allowing not just hypothesis confirmation or rejection, but also creating new data, problems and hypotheses.
