#Abstract
This article deals with the Jesuit settlements established in the former captaincy of Espírito Santo, Brazil, aiming to demonstrate the structure, organization, and hierarchy of the territorial system implemented by the Society of Jesus. The research, briefly outlined here, is part of the doctoral thesis underway at the Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto. The first part seeks to understand the bases, formation, and hesitations in the imposition and construction of a system, from where the greater focus in the second half of century XVI, with a view to the appropriation of certain aspects of existing indigenous structures, for them, but also with them, to realize the Jesuit mission in Brazil, ie the evangelization of indigenous populations and the occupation, profit, and governance of space. The second part, from one of the cases under study, Reritiba, tries to demonstrate concretely how it was organized, but above all how a Jesuit settlement evolved over time, both on a village scale and the scale of the captaincy. It is by analyzing the evolution of the seven cases under study over the centuries that it will be possible to better understand the insertion, territorial link, subordination and transformation introduced in the hierarchical system of the network of Jesuit settlements of the old captaincy of the Espírito Santo. In addition to documentary sources, namely epistolary correspondence, and in the context of an investigation in architecture and territory, the drawings and images collected, worked and produced constitute either as a communication resource or as an instrument and process of investigation, interaction and interpretation.
