#Abstract
With the paradigm shift in the organization of the post-modern society and the crescent decay of portuary cities all over the world, new solutions, vocationed to tourism, were applied in the Urban Planning of cities and their waterfront, starting in the 1960s. The present article proposes a discussion of the methodology to approach the study of the cities of Lisbon and Rio de Janeiro, in compared perspective, the development of their urban structure and its built architecture, going back to the moment in the history of the Portuguese court’s transition from the first city, to the second one, punctuating the relevance of the portuary activity in both cities from there on, accentuating models of urban planning that were shared between both cities since then.
