AbstractThe Portuguese carnage revolution (1974) meant, on the political-ideological level, a marginalization of the Radical Right that had supported the deposed regime. Due to various reasons, many rightists were forced to leave the country and to live, temporarily, abroad. The Radical Right created in its press organs a narrative that presented these men, regardless of the reason that had led them to abandon Portugal or not to return, as political exiles. Rightists presented a speech in which they accused Democracy of having promoted acts of censorship, arbitrary arrests and persecutions that would have been even in greater number and seriousness than those that occurred throughout the Estado Novo. We outline in this article a reflection about the essential aspects of this discourse and the purposes that the radical right aimed to achieve with it, how it translated the right-wing view of Portuguese colonialism, and the differences between the various groups and situations that it intended to cover under the same designation. And in the light of the consideration of all these elements, we conclude about
