AbstractIn Portugal, in the 40s, the analog magnetic tape is implemented as a means of recording and storing sound. Since then interviews, concerts, documentaries, radio programs and ethnographic research were recorded in this media. The amount of magnetic tape collections documenting historical, political, artistic and social events is extensive. Magnetic tape is an unstable carrier requiring a specific care of preservation. There is, however, no national phonographic archive with the responsibility to do so. Instead, there are many dispersed collections in need to be studied, preserved, digitized and documented. Some of these collections comprise the electroacoustic part of mixed musical works, which are also composed by instrumental performances. One of them is the collection of the composer Clotilde Rosa, object of study. In this case, it is imperative not only the conservation of the magnetic media, but also the preservation of the musical performance through its documentation. Clotilde Rosa, a prominent figure both in the creation and in the dissemination of the contemporary music in Portugal, composed several mixed media works, whose electroacoustic part was recorded on magnetic tape. Given the relevance of these tapes, because they are unique and original copies, it has already been made an assessment of their conservation status. Most of them present an advanced condition of deterioration which propelled the digitization of those in better conditions. Nevertheless, in some cases, these initiatives do not guarantee the possibility of conducting future performances of Clotilde Rosa’s mixed works, since there is a coordination element between instrumentaland electroacoustic part which is necessary to understand and document. T hus, in a pioneering approach we intend not only to reflect about the methodologies used in the preservation of Clotilde Rosa’s collection of magnetic tapes, but also to discuss the need of developing an additional documentation that may allow the preservation of her mixed works.
