Arte (pública) contemporânea em espaços museológicos = Contemporary (public) art in museums
Sofia Ponte
Documento (.pdf)
AbstractI t happens more and more often that artworks aspire, in a literal way, to influence the society in which they have been created. It is also increasingly recurring to watch those same artworks being integrated into the museum as a safeguard of that artistic heritage. Reflecting on the transfer of meanings that that displacement implies, I will address contemporary (public) art concepts, as well as ideas, which stand for a transformation in the institutional framework of an object of art. Focusing on the artwork paraSITE (1998-present) by North-American artist Michael Rakowitz, consisting of a portable shelter for the homeless distributed in various cities of his country of origin, and later displayed in various museological contexts, this article shows how the musealization of (public) contemporary artworks requires the creation of strategies within the museum context. This argument is developed through discussion of the strategies used in the exhibition Beyond Green: towards a sustainable art (2005) curated by Stephanie Smith, where paraSITE was one of the works presented.
