Um Oficial da Casa dos Contos : o contador
Hélder Brandão
Documento (.pdf)
AbstractIn this article we present our master thesis’ dissertation on the origin and evolution of the office of contador - the crown’s financial affair administrator, who governed every monetary transaction and who was the grand inquisitor and fiscal agent to the realm’s central banking system. This office - similar to those of Lord High Treasurer or Minister of Finance -, first appears in a simple reduced form, around 1287, during King Dinis’ reign, when contadores executed simple public accountancy with unspecified roles. It is during King Afonso IV’s reign (1325-1357) that the office becomes more detailed, when they become financial overseers of both the royal household and all the realm’s financial jurisdictions (almoxarifados). In this article we sought to bring to discussion several issues related to this important office, namely how it evolved from a small office with unspecified roles to that of grand inquisitor, comparable to the most senior member of the Exchequer.
