AbstractThis PhD thesis intends to accomplish a study of the Portuguese weapons in the late medieval and early modern periods, and its diachronic evolution, to answer some historiographical questions that are still gaps in the military history studies, related to the theory and praxis of war. Based on a detailed study of the military equipment, offensive and defensive, used by the Portuguese army, it will be compound, first, a catalogue of arms and armour and established the main typologies of weapons, key to understand its evolution, and its possible framework in the so-called “military revolution”. Secondly, in a much more close art history approach, we will try to answer to a group of questions, which are mostly about imagery, but that are crucial for the understanding of the thesis subject. These questions include the determination of authenticity of the representations, which is also comprehend if the artists followed only the artistic conventions of the time or, on the contrary, if they seek a historic fidelity in the equipment represented on their works of art. This topic was connected as well with the significance of the hand of the artists on their works, with the importance of their clientele and also with the traditions of representation of the time, factors that could deceive the messages inserted in the iconographical sources. In this context, it is important to analyse the understanding of the artistic programmes, to survey the existing representation typologies, to recognize the propagandistic aims of the commissions of some works of art, to characterize the iconological programme in them, as well as to realize the reasons for the subject of war was always a matter of aesthetic attention.
