O pregão do cancioneiro e outras cantigas em O menino atrasado, de Cecília Meireles
Elizângela Gonçalves Pinheiro
Documento (.pdf)
AbstractThe Brazilian Christmas tale O menino atrasado was written by Cecília Meireles in 1940. It updates Portuguese tradition regarding the structure of the act (auto) genre, the Christmas theme, and the rhyme typical of chansonniers’ oral cadence. The language used by Meireles metaphorically expresses the future of past and present, particularly with regard to memories from other contexts. Within modern-day Brazil, the oral rhythm of street trades, a heritage from Iberian pamphlets (folhetos) or from exchanges at medieval fairs, now taken up from a different perspective, updates cultural standards of behaviour in the New World. This study seeks to bring forth elements from the celebrations of Jesus’ birth and the visit of the Wise Men, in an attempt to highlight echoes of the history of chansonniers in Meireles’ lyrical theatre. Such echoes evoke the rhythms employed in Cantigas de Santa Maria, composed by Afonso X, and “Noite de Santos Reis”, composed by Elomar Figueira Mello.
