Documento (.pdf)
AbstractThe society of the Ancient Regime was conditioned by a set of laws that limited, like nowadays, the action of the individuals in society. The Pombaline period was a time of greatest changes at this level. Numerous norms had emerged that had somehow changed legal condifications, including towards women. In practice, it is perceptible that the female, besides being the target of numerous abuses, namely the rape, perform also acts of violence. We find her assaulting other women and men and committing other unethical acts, such as adultery. Thus, the main objective of this work is to discuss the issues that previously posed : What is the representativeness of women in the world of crime ? Were women aggressors or victims ? Which crimes were mostly carried out by these ladies ? Which crimes were they most subject to ? In order to solve these questions, a crucial source for the study was selected: the letters of forgiveness registered in public notary records, a very pertinent source, since it shows daily day realities. Porto was chosen as a case study, a city that, since the 18th century, has become a constantly changing and growing region, being also the pole of confluence of the entire Portugal Northern region.
