#Abstract
There are many reports about the two most impactful Douro river floods in the 20th century (1909 and 1962), with elaborate studies and several photographic memories. This article will go back in time to analyze the floods of this river during the 18th century, still deficiently studied, but with very negative consequences for both the economy and the society of Porto. Consequently, it will try to understand how the floods interacted with each of these topics (economy and society), analyzing in-depth the city trade, the riverside populations, urbanization of the city and, finally, the initiatives taken by the authorities to solve or prevent the effects caused by the floods. This paper crosses primary sources with the analysis of bibliography that goes from general themes, as the general histories of Porto, to specific ones, such as climate, the Douro river, commerce, population, and the river floods, which is here the object of study.
