#O estudo de um corpo militar: os espingardeiros (c.1437- 1518) : metodologias, abordagens e hipóteses de um projeto de dissertação de mestrado

#Abstract
This article aims to present a Master Thesis project which intends to understand a Portuguese military corp: «os espingardeiros» (handgunners). This corp was created in the fifteenth century, in a firearms widespread context in the European armies, and their members were characterized by the use of portable firearms in combat (weapons that could be handled by a single combatant, such as «colobretas» or rifles). Although the first references, from the Tangiers' campaign in 1437, have denounced the presence of corps which were not significant in a numerical perspective, they quickly have grown both in number and importance if we analyse the approximately 400 «cartas de privilégio» (privilege letters) dedicated to these soldiers in the Chancellery of D. João II. Regarding the internal organization of the militia, we highlight the similarities of the «espingardeiros» (handgunners) with the «besteiros do conto» (crossbowmen). Although the latter has been implanted in the territory since 1299, we can spot a joint military performance, noted in the chronological sources, between the two militias.
