#Abstract
This article offers a reflection on the Franciscan performance in the political game in Portugal of the Restoration, in the immediately posterior context to the rupture announced on December 1, 1640. At the center of the analysis, which is not intended to be exhaustive, is the role played by Franciscans in the fabrication of the political concert, in the mobilization of their prophetic arsenal in defense of the new dynasty, and in the mobilization of support - nobiliarchic and popular – to the cause. From the order in service of politics to the internal politics of order, the article also opens space for the discussions about the alignment of the Franciscan provinces of Portugal to king John IV, evident in the convulsions that have crossed relations between them and their General Minister, at the time a Castilian one, and in the controversies regarding the installation of a Portuguese General Commissary that avoided the contact of the friars with the superior of enemy nation.
