#Abstract
The edition of Andrea Alciato‘s Emblematum Liber (1531) of enormous success and european wide disclosure had a strong influence in the cultural mentality of Europe, namely through the forms of communication in society and culture and in the artistic expression of XVI and XVII centuries. In Portugal, in spite of the lack of complete translations of Alciato‘s work, its influence was felt in multiple aspects, mainly through emblem books, decorative representations and ephemeral architecture but also through the way it affects the construction of the literary speech dominated by image. This work aims to analise the way emblematic literature, in its various features of formal and conceptual expression developed through XVI century, influenced portuguese mannerist pastoral literature of the beginning of XVII century, late heiresses of the bucolic genre, making them to adopt a verbal iconic speech with innovative characteristics and original and singular aspects, both in terms of structure and contents adapted to the portuguese bucolic expression.
