AbstractIn its genesis, the great cities were built with walled enclosures for its defence. These defensive systems were punctuated by towers whose goal would be the observation of the surrounding area. Évora is a city of ancient origin, and was inhabited successively by several people, the Romans, Goths and Saracens, among others. It integrates currently three sets of walls: the Roman-Gothic-Arab period, the Late Middle Ages in the XIII / XIV century, and the bastion built in the period of the wars of the Restoration, with the Vauban system. In this city there is a great diversity of different kinds of towers that can be noticeable for several mapping and pictorial assets representative of its evolution. The objective of this study is to analyse the various types of available mapping that was being produced throughout the ages, military-oriented, regional, urban, urban design and iconography, to realize the influence of the presence of the towers in the development of the city.
