Da traça de Terzi ao Plano Aguiar : quatro séculos de estratégia urbana

AbstractThe urban layout we know today results from a complex – and still little studied – superimposition of interventions which have been developing from at least as early as the 13th century, but which do not seem to signify major disruptions in the unity of its medieval urban structure. The evolution of this centre, in terms of its morphology, cannot be disassociated from its socioeconomic system, constantly expanding along the riverfront, and from there into its interior, nor from its defensive needs, that justified the construction strategies used in the fortifications built in the fourteenth century and later in the seventeenth century, which conditioned the urban growth. Some researchers have used maps and charts of this region to contextualise and illustrate their studies, but cases in which the graphic document are analysed as an object of study are rare. So, over the years and through various publications, it was possible to collect the various maps relating to Setúbal, and to trace chronological and isolated periods from its urban growth, based on this analysis, but it is urgent now to systematize all this representations and try to understand the urban, military or built strategies implicit in each one of them. It is this history of strategic decisions about Setubal over almost four centuries and the consequent urban transformations that actually occurred, better or worse expressed in this cartographic production collected, that we propose to analyse and disseminate.
