#Abstract
In this study case, cartography will be used as an aid to spatial reconstruction of a parish in the space of Ribeira Lima, near the mouth of its river, in which the banks changes are constant and also the intention to regularize it, improving that way the navigation. Meadela (in Viana do Castelo) was chosen as a study case, being this analysis integrated in the doctoral thesis conducted by me at University of Porto, Faculty of Arts, with the title “Living, Watering and Farming: common and private property in 18th to 20th century Lima Valley” which deals with spatial changes in the long term and how developments in common and private property in this region, associated with the farm houses, its lands and the families who inhabited and used this space, contributed to its transformation. Based on the cartography collected in this region, we intend to analyze the changes over time, identifying the main spatial anchors present in different representations. By crossing these sources with historical cartography, we will seek to chart a course in the evolution of this territory, supported mainly by the toponymical variation, the roads layout and the drawing line of the shores, trying to understand the reason for some changes and finding justifications for such specific configuration that this stretch of the Lima valley gives us.
