#Abstract
The National Department of Mineral Production (DNPM) has a library with extensive bibliography specialized in geology and mining. The highlight is the cartographic collection representing the history of Brazilian territory and national mining activity. A survey conducted by June 2015 identified about two thousand maps and charts depicting various themes: geology, hydrography, railways, mineralogy on several extensions. The maps date back to the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Among the authors point out: Geographical Service of the Army, Geological and Mineralogical Survey of Brazil, commission Geographica Geological and Mines Geraes, Navy of Brazil, Division of Geology and Mineralogy of the DNPM National Department of Railroads, National Council of Geography. The project is being conducted in partnership with the Public Archive of the Federal District (ArPDF) and aims to inventory, organize, scan, organize and pass on information in digital form. The work is being executed in phases, which include the identification of historical maps and their scanning and later documentary and bibliographical research for editing a digital atlas. The publication of an Atlas of Historic DNPM maps, as well as preserving historical documentation aims to provide this collection for public access, protect it benefiting both society in general and the mining sector.
