Macau : uma sociedade esclavagista (séculos XVI-XVIII)?
Daniel Valenzuela Tavares
File (.pdf)
AbstractThe present study focuses on the slave population of Macau’s colony trough the XVI and XVIII centuries. The purpose of this paper is to comprehend the role of slaves and captives inside the Macanese society and understand until which point those agents contributed for the maintenance and prosperity of the Portuguese colony. Hence, different reports of the Macanese society like letters and travel reports have been analysed, in which its possible to perceive the distinct roles performed by slaves. Basing this research in writings like those of Peter Mundy or António de Gouvea, it will be possible to answer the interrogation that supports the study in question: Was Macao a society based on slavery?
