Manifestações musicais como forma de representação social : a música na Gazeta de Lisboa
Ana Catarina Machado
File (.pdf)
AbstractConsidering what is known about the Baroque and its artistic representations, namely the music, it is important to stress its role in the sociability of the elites, as they used art to stand out amongst themselves. Many works about the history of Portuguese music refer that, in the first half of the eighteenth century, there was a major concern with religious music, increased after D. João V’s convalescence. in 1742. In the second half of the century, there should have been a preference for opera and the prevalence of musical events in public theaters. In this context, the Gazeta de Lisboa will be used as an empirical universe of analysis to check the accuracy of this analysis. The Gazeta de Lisboa is an important source for the study of Portuguese music in the eighteenth century, and itself a communication channel for an elitist society that wanted to show its modernity also through music.
