Inês Osório
File (.pdf)
AbstractThe subject that we propose to explore here is part of the Portuguese Overseas Empire History and consists in the study of the Portuguese royal polices about slave trade, that took place in the Atlantic, between 1640 and 1706. Looking ascertain, with this project, the presence or absence of specific royal guidance on the slave trade in the Atlantic, it was defined as an object of study the legislation produced during the reigns of King John IV, King Alfonso VI and D. Pedro II on the theme at stake. By analysing the selected legislation, we sought to determine how the royal heads intervened in this traffic, hoping to understand whether it was made available by contracts with specific companies or singular merchants, or by means of grating exclusive trade, or even if there would be a direct trade made by crown agents. Last but not the least, we tried to clarify potential royal priorities about the slave trade, by identifying which thematic areas deserved more attention in the legislation.
