Os voluntários portugueses na Divisão Azul : (1941-1943)
Andreia dos Santos Diogo
File (.pdf)
AbstractAlthough the political strategy from the portuguese government settled on neutrality before the new world conflict, some compatriots didn’t follow this standard, taking different initiatives. The Portuguese Legion supported the attack on communism publicly, and therefore, the fight against the Soviet Union by Germany. It was in this context that several Portuguese joined the Blue Division, a unit of volunteers established in Spain, to support the German forces in the combat. The desire to create similar unit in Portugal stemmed not only from the German government but also from the Portuguese Legion, however, a Portuguese Division was never created. Awaiting them at the eastern front, these Portuguese found temperatures below 50 °C negative, very poor alimentation, little rest, where suitable places for that didn’t existed, and numerous casualties.
