A Evolução do Almirantado Português ao longo da época medieval
João Pedro Santos Alves
File (.pdf)
AbstractThe portuguese Admiralty was created during the reign of D. Dinis bringing to Portugal a supreme command over the navy under the orders of the genovese Manuel Pessanha, and with him came a huge advancement in the technics of conducting naval warfare, as well as modernizing the organization of the portuguese fleet. The implementation of the portuguese Admiralty represented the will to consolidate the defense of the sea coast and the turning of tides between the portuguese and the muslims in the oceanic theatre of war. The Admiralty knew its highest point during the reign of D. Fernando, the crisis of succession in 1383-1385 shook it, and during all of the XVth century it tried to regain all of its initial might and status, but it faced a new reality in the oceanic stage and in the new orientations of the maritime policies which resulted in its withdrawal from the front lines of naval warfare, and from the political and diplomatic affairs of the kingdom. In the beginning of the XVIth century the office of Admiral had transformed itself into a mere noble title.
