A presença portuguesa na América espanhola do século XVII : Luís Gomes Barreto e os cristãos novos de Cartagena das Índias
Simão Castro Feijó Araújo da Mata
File (.pdf)
AbstractThroughout the so-called Early Modern Period, Portuguese merchants spread out through the globe, establishing contacts and commercial networks that also reached territories that were not under the rule of the Portuguese crown. This paper aims at analyzing some particularities of the Portuguese community living in Cartagena de Indias, in the Viceroyalty of Peru, through a biographical approach which seeks to include elements of a prosopographical analysis. Calling upon the inquisitorial process of Luís Gomes Barreto we seek, besides understanding certain aspects of his personal network of relationships, to draw conclusions regarding the nature of the american inquisitorial persecutions of the 1630s and 1640s.
