O Suicídio na Europa da Época Moderna : Perspetivas cruzadas

AbstractSuicide, as the act of intentionally causing one's own death, it’s a theme that can be approached from multiple perspectives, from the Psychology to Sociology, to Theology, among others. In the Early Modern Era, suicide was already a controversial issue for the society, but also for religion, because this one traditionally considers suicide as an offense towards God (a sin), being the theological the mainstream perspective. To confirm (or not) this hypothesis, this paper analyzes Biathanatos of Donne, the Essays on Suicide of Hume and Werther of Goethe in search for arguments that condemn or support suicide. The analysis validates the hypothesis that insanity replaces sin in the way early modern societal outlook towards suicides
