António Valpaços
File (.pdf)
AbstractThis article exposes the results of the research work on goldsmiths' class associations in the city of Porto, founded between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, in a period when the monarchical regime was dying and the republicans conspired to take power. This text analyses the path of these associations, their growth and ideological maturation, during the 1st Republic, until their decline with the establishment of the military dictatorship, culminating in their disappearance, in 1933, when the new corporate order and the institution of National Unions is established, putting an end to free unionism. Thus, we intend to contribute to the history of these workers 'associations, making known part of their historical legacy and their role in the Porto and national workers' movement. In the fight for the transformation of society and for the improvement of the living conditions of the workers, the goldsmiths of Porto also made an important contribution.
