#Abstract
The tramcar disaster at Cais das Pedras was the worst of all accidents involving vehicles from the then known Companhia Carris de Ferro do Porto. This article focuses on the disaster itself, seeking to understand the anomalous situations that caused it and also the events of that fateful afternoon in December 1911. It addresses and makes known the reactions that this catastrophe triggered, carried out by the concessionaire company, by the organs of power, by civil society and the periodical press, with a view to determining responsibilities, compensating victims and adopting preventive measures with the aim of preventing new misfortunes.
