A representação e a funcionalização do autocontrole nos Romances em Prosa em Língua Alemã do Século XVI

AbstractThe discussion of the temporal limit between the Middle Ages and the Modern Age is still, to an extent, open to question. In this sense, German researchers acknowledge a transition period (Frühe Neuzeit) between the two eras, in which profound transformations of power and economic structures, along with spatial and social organization, take place. Within this context, the prose novels (Prosaroman), that were common knowledge in urban spheres and carried elements of this crisis period, appear as a great novelty. Through the analysis of four specific novels written during that period, the objective of my doctoral work is to discuss the presentation and functionalization of self-control, an element well-known amongst experts as fundamental when it comes to the understanding of Modernity. Self-control plays a pivotal role in the successes or failures of the characters; it is no longer related to the moderation of morally undesirable impulses, but instead, to a new rationality, a consciousness regarding the need to adapt the means to achieve the desired objectives.
